The Huawei P series has redefined style since its introduction in 2012. Now, as the 8 is about to be released across the Middle East, we look back over the progression of the P.
It feels like only yesterday that Huawei launched the Ascend P1 during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the first of their new P series. Since this launch in 2013, the series has since transformed into a dominant and self-sufficient product range that rivals the best handsets in the world.
Although the P1 may have relied too heavily on its thin build, as the series has grown, the evolution of the device has seen many impressive features added. For example, the P8 and P8 Max boast some of the best features on the market, as well as being known for their sleek and stylish design that has redefined the way handsets are built.
The P1 can now be recognized merely as an introductory model that laid the foundations for the later devices that now demand attention from the market. At the time, the P1 had much to offer. An impressive 7.7mm thin body, marking it one of the slimmest on the market in its day, and employing the sharp and receptive Android 4.0 making it a powerful, yet lightweight handset.
Where the P2 really came to life was in its processing speed. Still as glossy and sleek as its predecessor, but with more emphasis on the overall aesthetic finish and feel. Huawei drew inspiration from the infinity pool, noticeable whereby the screen approaches the edges of the device, opening up the display angelically.
The display was important to Huawei. Cleverly, it opted for just a 1,280×720-pixel resolution, less than its high-end competitors. However, supporting research suggested the human eye couldn’t identify a higher resolution than that of the P2
It was also in this model where the first sign of what was to be a brilliant camera offering from Huawei started to take shape. A 13-megapixel camera, supported by a 1.3-megapixel front camera offered a glimpse into the near-future, whereby Huawei developed the first parallel dual-lens camera for its Honor series.
It was after the P2 that Huawei took a more stern approach to design and really turned the screws to ensure the next device was cutting edge. Jump to the P6, standing at just 6.18mm thick, with classy, and more stable looking aluminum edges.
Previous models were accused of handling a little softly. However, the P6 was a firm and sturdy device in the hand of the user. In fact, it could be argued the P6 set the tone in terms of build quality for all of Huawei’s next model lines. Its sleekness and power was aimed directly at the high-end market, however its price point was much more attractive.
The P7 that followed surprised audiences with a thicker body, putting an end to the pattern of progressively slimmer handsets. The notable addition to the series was its 8-megapixel front-facing camera; a superb selling point for selfie fans.
Moreover, the word Ascend has been dropped, and Huawei has followed a global vendor trend of releasing two models at once, with the P8 and the P8 Max both hitting shelves at the same time. Now, Middle East audiences are about to be introduced to the P8, which has already received international acclaim in other markets. Firstly, the corner cutting on the design has been rectified; the P8 is again slimmer than its predecessor at just 6.5mm.
Quoted as Huawei’s best device to date, the P8 offers all the top features, high resolution, large screen display, and camera quality to rival its competitors, but again at a more tempting price point.
Running as smoothly as ever on Android’s Lollipop OS, it boasts a 5.2-inch full HD display, complete with an 8-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel lead camera on the back.
Overall, the P8 feels like the flagship device it’s being billed as. The P series has come a long way in a relatively short time, a point that says more about the industry than it does about Huawei. However, with the ability to continue innovating at pace, the quality of devices continue to improve at the speed of consumer demands.
